예술로 풀어가는 환경, 기후위기: TEDx 밀키베이비 전시

[TEDxSeoul] 기후변화를 위한 예술, 밀키베이비가 함께 하다

전 세계에 화두는 기후위기입니다. 현재 두바이에서도 2023년기후변화총회가 이뤄지고 있어요. TEDxSeoul에서 기후 위기에 대한 해결을 촉구하기 위해 TED SPRINTS라는 프로젝트를 열어 왔습니다. 현재까지 전 세계 9개국에서 진행되었고, 올해는 대한민국 서울에서 개최됩니다.

밀키베이비는 한국 대표 작가로 선정되어 12월 8일부터 14일까지 TEDxSeoul 협력기관인 인사동 KOTE에서 TEDx의 전시에 참가합니다. 저의 작품은 Artists for Climate 웹사이트를 통해 전 세계와 공유하게 되었습니다. 이번 전시는 글로벌 아트스튜디오 Fine Acts, KOTE, 주한영국대사관이 함께합니다.

[TEDxSeoul] Art for Climate Change, with MilkyBaby

The climate crisis is a hot topic around the world. TEDxSeoul has been organising a project called TED SPRINTS to call for a solution to the climate crisis. It has been held in nine countries around the world, and this year it will be held in Seoul, South Korea.

Milkybaby has been selected to represent Korea and will be exhibiting at TEDxSeoul's partner organisation KOTE in Insadong from 8-14 December. My work will be shared with the world through the Artists for Climate website. The exhibition is organised by global art studio Fine Acts, KOTE and the British Embassy in Seoul.

기후 위기를 다룬 작품들은 주로 인간에게 경고하고 경각심을 일으키는 내용이 많은데, 이번 프로젝트는 '희망' 에 초점을 맞춥니다. 저는 올초 출간한 환경 에세이툰 '지구로운 출발'에도 같은 맥락의 메세지를 담았습니다. 지구를 위한 실천을 가로막는 것들은 많이 있지만, 인간은 본능적으로 자신을 불편하게 하는 것들은 피하려고 합니다. '불편함'을 참고 친환경 실천을 하라는 메세지는 더이상 통하지 않는다고 생각했지요. 저의 실천을 고스란히 담은 <지구로운 출발> 책을 통해, 환경을 위한 실천의 과정이 즐겁고, 나에게 도움이 되며, 새로운 시도와 발견을 통해 자신을 성장시키는 과정이라는 것을 강조하고 싶었습니다.

While much of my work on the climate crisis is about warning and alarmism, this project focuses on hope. There are many things that can get in the way of taking action for the planet, but as humans we instinctively avoid things that make us uncomfortable, and I felt that the message of "pushing through the discomfort" to take action for the planet was no longer working. Through the book, which is based on my own practice, I wanted to emphasise that the process of taking action for the environment can be enjoyable, beneficial, and a way to grow through trying new things and making new discoveries.

모든 것은 연결되어 있다.

이번 저의 작품의 제목은 '모든 것은 연결되어 있다.'입니다. 꿀벌의 멸종은, 인간의 멸종을 시사하기도 합니다. 기후 위기로 생태계의 한 부분이 무너지면, 결국 인간도 무너집니다. 제가 지구로운 실천을 하면서 절절하게 깨달은, '인간 우월주의를 버리고, 생물 다양성을 지키자'는 이야기를 하고 싶었습니다.

인간은 지구 상의 수많은 생물 중 일부일 뿐이지만, 우리는 종종 다른 생태계와 연결되어 있다는 사실을 잊고 삽니다. 그래서 오직 인간의 이익을 위해 다른 동식물을 이용하고, 그들의 터전을 파괴하지요. 지구 곳곳에서 기후 위기를 겪고 있는 우리는 더이상 예전 같은 방식으로 살면 안된다는 것을 압니다. 다양한 생명들과의 '공존'을 위해 노력 하고, 서로 연결되어 있음을 잊지 말자는 메세지를 그림을 통해 전달하고자 합니다.

Everything is connected.

The title of my piece is "Everything is Connected. The extinction of the honeybee could mean the extinction of humans. When one part of the ecosystem collapses due to the climate crisis, we collapse. I wanted to tell a story that I've come to realise so acutely through my global practice: let's stop being human, and start protecting biodiversity.

Humans are just one of the many creatures on the planet, but we often forget that we are connected to other ecosystems, so we exploit other plants and animals and destroy their habitats for our own benefit. With the climate crisis in many parts of the world, we know that we can no longer live in the same way. Through my paintings, I want to convey the message that we should strive for "coexistence" with various living beings and not forget that we are all connected.
